After sleeping for five hundred years, Lightning is awoken by the deity Bhunivelze and chosen to be the Savior, a semi-divine figure tasked with rescuing the souls of Nova Chrysalia, which is destined to end for good in thirteen days, so they may be reborn in a new world. Lightning undertakes this task to rescue and ensure the rebirth of Serah's spirit. As she journeys and performs her task, she encounters her former allies and adversaries, many of them carrying heavy emotional burdens, and ends up tangled in the rivalry between the Order and the Children of Etro. Added to this is a prophecy which states that Lightning is going to try and destroy the world.
Over the 13-day span of the game, certain actions Lightning takes will influence the flow of time. She will be able to gain or lose time, depending on what she does; saving one person could roll back the clock, while saving another person could move it forward. Time is a fundamental theme of Lightning Returns; clocks will be shown everywhere to illustrate the importance and progression of time in the overworld. The world clock starts out at seven days, but it can be extended to a maximum of thirteen days by giving Eradia, obtained by completing quests, to Yggdrasil, a magical tree located in a static area called the Ark. The Ark is a location where the in-game clock does not progress: Lightning is returned there at the end of each day to give Eradia to Yggdrasil, and to restock on supplies. Toriyama has stated that, because of the timed nature of the game, there are varying routes through the game and that it will not be possible to see all the content in one playthrough, therefore encouraging multiple playthroughs.
